Hello Prayer Partners,
Everything is going very well here this week. It is now Wednesday evening, and the camp is just past the half way point. We can’t believe that the time is going by so fast! We have a wonderful supportive Slovakian Staff working with us. The student age range this week is ages 7 - 17.
Last evening Vlado Matas gave a presentation about the Social Center & Halfway House Directed by Stano Gurka. We found out a bit about the history of the Center. About 10 years ago the Youth Ministry began and out of that a Social Outreach Center was started because of the many children from broken homes and alcoholism in this small village. Stanislav Gurka was converted, and began to open his home to young people in need. Soon he had 10 young boys and men living in his home with his family. Now the Social Outreach Center with additional housing and Stano’s growing vision, is ministering to 20 men in a residential environment where they are discipled and assisted in getting back on their feet and becoming established in productive lives. Right now the young men are living in a partially renovated property (it used to be an old run down Protestant school) It is always full and only partially renovated as they await funds to come in for the project.
Thursday evening we will have a presentation given to us by Slavo Slovik, Slovak Evangelistic Center, which was our host ministry for this trip. He is a young man with great vision for his country. They are growing in effectiveness in reaching secular people through radio, television and via the internet and also in encouraging believers in prisons and in the churches through conferences, radio and printed media. And now also through the English camp as it gains a reputation here in Slovakia.
Here in Velky Slavkov, we are housed in and use as our facilities for camp, a Youth Center serving the entire country. Also in this small village is this Social Outreach Center to a needy village which is a halfway house with young people in residence, who are hungry to grow and in great need; and I just want to note that this Youth Outreach Center and the Social Outreach Center are the only ones of their kind in all of Slovakia.
Each morning before camp we start out with devotions. Various team members have been sharing an encouraging devotion from the Word with us before we begin our day of camp. At our Opening, we have been learning some new songs and also singing some that the students already know. Our team members have been sharing a message, testimony or object lesson
with the students reinforcing the theme of the day. Then Donna our team leader, uses student Volunteers to introduce the Bible Story.
Yesterday we each had photos taken of our class. These pictures will be gifts to the students given on the last day. Everyone looked very nice! Tomorrow we will take a group picture with all of the students & staff along with the American team.
One of the fun subjects that we offer is drama. Each of the classes is assigned one of three stories from scripture to prepare as a drama to be performed at the Closing Ceremonies. It gives the students the opportunity to really internalize Bible stories as they go over the drama again and again while practicing. We have some very creative dramas, as the classes seem to be going all out with props, backdrops, costuming, songs and Bible verses to convey the message. Most of the students and Slovakian translators really enjoy this.
Blessings,
The 2010 Slovakia English Bible Camp Team
